Parent Tasks

Parent tasks can be created in the Gantt to represent the High-level deliverables (or Phases) in the project plan.  Parent tasks borrow their key characteristics from the Child tasks that they are linked to.

In the screenshot below, the Parent task (Design) is signified by the fact that there is an arrow icon pointing to the right and the text is bold.

When you select the arrow icon it will point diagonally and the Gantt view will expand to show all the “child” or sub tasks underneath.

  • To create a sub task, right click the task you would like to be the parent task and click Add Task or you can select the parent task and do so through the Add menu on the toolbar.
  • Select After current task (as a sub task).
  • Add in any other necessary details and click OK.

You can make use of a user guide to help a user get a complete understanding of a feature or a product. For example, this is how a user guide might look for using article template.

Parent Task Properties

When you open the Task Manager window on a Parent task you will notice that the Date, Duration, Status and % complete fields are greyed out.

This is due to the fact that the fields are populated from the “Child Tasks” that the Parent Task is linked to.
