GovCon: Work Authorization (WAD) Register

A Work Authorization (WAD) register is a log representing a bilateral agreement between the project manager and the manager of the responsible organization (often referred to as the Control Account Manager or CAM) to accomplish and manage the authorized scope of work, schedule, and budget. As a minimum this document must include the relevant WBS Control Account code, statement of work, scheduled start and completion dates, budget, and the name of the CAM.

Why Would Customer Use?

A Work Authorization Log is used to track, manage, and document approvals for work before it begins. Customers typically use it for the following reasons:

  1. Control and Accountability – Ensures all work is properly authorized and prevents unauthorized tasks.

  2. Audit Trail – Provides a record of who approved what work and when, supporting compliance and auditing requirements.

  3. Budget Management – Helps monitor costs by linking approved work to budgets or contracts.

  4. Project Visibility – Offers a centralized view of all authorized work, making it easier to track progress and manage resources.

  5. Risk Reduction – Minimizes the chance of scope creep or performing work without proper approval.
